Virtual worlds Ameba Piggu (Ameba Pico) or TinierMe are just two CyberAgent properties boasting a handsome number of users located outside of Japan. The third one is Poupeegirl, an avatar-based “fashion community” mainly targeted at girls.
CyberAgent launched Poupeegirl in 2007 before spinning it off as a separate company (poupeegirl,Inc.) one year later.
On the site, users can dress up avatars (called Poupees), buy virtual clothes with real money, set up virtual closets, interact with other members, etc. (Wikipedia has a concise description of the mechanics in English).
The company now announced it hit the 1 million user mark yesterday, adding that a remarkable 46% of all Poupeegirl members are located outside Japan (up from 35% two years ago).
Break down by language: English 20%, Portuguese 9%, Spanish 6%, and Chinese 4%.
