It took a while, but Rakuten finally released an iPhone app (for Rakuten Ichiba, its online mall) yesterday. It’s available for free in the Japanese App Store and makes it easier for iPhone users to browse through the 70 million items currently listed in Rakuten Ichiba.
It’s a good move, as the number of iPhone users in Japan is estimated to be well over 5 million users (Rakuten itself currently boasts 70 million members). I am sure an Android version will follow soon, as Android is spreading in Japan even faster.

Rakuten also offers an iPhone app for its namesake book store and its blogging platform.
