LINE Revenant Gate: LINE Is Finally Rolling Out Its 3D Action RPG

L

As I mentioned earlier, the LINE Games platform has been very much overrated since its launch in 2012. One of the main reasons is that most of the titles are extremely casual, and most belong to one genre: puzzle games.

There has been an inflation of these “light” games (some of which were, of course, fun and successful commercially) – until LINE axed around 30% of all games on its platform in June.

Today, the company announced that it is finally ready to roll out LINE Revenant Gate, which will neither be casual nor a puzzle game: it’s a 3D action RPG, the first of its kind on the platform. (Just as a side note, RPGs or games with RPG elements are – by far – the most popular genre in Japan.) LINE Revenant Gate

LINE Revenant Gate isn’t a new title but has rather been in the works for quite a long time: it was actually shown first in August 2013, and even the trailer linked to below has been available since then.

According to LINE, the focus will be on the battles: users control their character with a virtual pad, an attack button, and a guard button.

The way the battles will work is that if players click on the guard button with the right timing, they can execute a parry. If enemies get attacked from behind, a “back stab” inflicts more damage than usual attacks. User can also try to chain attacks to form combos.

Needless to say, characters and their weapons and armor get more powerful over time. The gameplay will be mission-based, but there will be a rudimentary story to the game. Users can also call for their LINE friends to help out during difficult missions or exchange items.

Made by NHNPlayArt, the hack-and-slash will be out in Japanese “this summer” on iOS and Android. LINE opened pre-registration in Japan today, but there is no word yet on a possible international release.
