Tokyo-based (and listed) social game maker Voltage is famous in Japan for covering a very specific genre: social dating simulations. In these games, players are supposed to “date” virtual characters in various settings, usually embedded in a narrative that guides users from one situation to the next.
There are various types in this genre: games for girls wanting to date boys and vice versa, and games with a gay theme.
Voltage focuses on the first type and now plans to bring their catalogue (they publish games on GREE, Mobage, and Mixi) to the world.
The company announced plans to establish “Voltage Entertainment USA” within this month but so far didn’t specify when exactly. Apparently, the US office in San Francisco will be led by the CEO of Voltage proper, Yuzi Tsutani.
The plan is to bolster efforts to distribute social dating and love simulations on smartphones to the English-speaking world.
So far, Voltage has rolled out two such titles on Android and iOS in English, Pirates In Love and My Forged Wedding.
