One of Japan’s largest maker of video games, Capcom, today announced it will enter the global social games market with a spin-off company called Beeline.
The new business will initially be geographically focused on Japan and other countries in Asia. Capcom says they are eyeing the smartphone market in particular and that they were motivated by the success they have seen on mobiles so far: the three casual freemium games Capcom offered on cell phones have seen a combined 15 million downloads (which is a pretty solid number).
The news is a huge deal for Capcom, as it intends to position Beeline as a “second brand” and restructure the entire company in the process. Beeline was established today in Osaka.
