Good news for Yahoo Japan and Google Japan: The country’s Fair Trade Commission gave the green light to a proposed cooperation between Yahoo Japan and Google, stating that the deal wouldn’t “immediately” violate antitrust rules.
In July this year, Yahoo Japan announced it would make use of Google’s technology to run its Internet searches and search-based advertising services. In other words, any search inquiry made on Yahoo Japan won’t be powered by Yahoo itself anymore: the results will be delivered by Google’s Japanese division.
The cooperation means that over 90% of the search market in Japan will be controlled by these two companies.
